When you are a dancer in the prime of your career you don’t have much time to think about retiring. You are too busy with choreography, rehearsals, performing, and in my case, directing. As the years go by gradually your body doesn’t feel like it used to, it doesn’t bounce back as quickly as it did when you were younger. Post-performance aches and pains make you worry about your joints, and the long term cost of continuing to do what you love. However you have the kinesthetic memory of how great you felt when you were dancing and you never want to loose that ability. Luckily, in my case, just as these fears began to become real, I heard about GYROKINESIS® and GYROTONIC® Exercise from my former dance teacher and mentor in Cleveland. I took a class and knew immediately this was what I needed. I decided to study to become an instructor in both techniques.
GYROKINESIS® exercises are performed on low stools, and mats as well as in standing positions. The class starts with a series of self-massage movements to “awaken the senses.” Then the system, gently through rhythmic and spiral movements, mobilize, the spine through a series of arching, curling, bending and twisting. The use of corresponding breath patterns for every movement helps to open up the energy pathways, stimulate the nervous system, and oxygenate the blood. The same movement patterns are expanded to release the hip, knee, hamstring, and quadriceps. The movement is fluid and postures are not held for long periods of time making it look and feel like dance, swimming, or tai chi.
GYROTONIC® exercises are performed in private sessions using the Gyrotonic Expansion System®. The uniqueness of The System is that it stretches and strengthens at the same time with minimal effort, while it increases the range of motion and helps to develop coordination. Because it was conceived using the key principles of dance, swimming, gymnastics, yoga and dance, major muscle groups are worked interdependently and in an integrated manner.
GYROKINESIS® and GYROTONIC® exercises are beneficial for all fitness levels, people from all walks of life, and any age level. Individuals that have been working with me are not just dancers. It is excellent for people who have sedentary jobs and would like to relieve stress and tension from the week, while at the same time increasing muscle tone. It can help you to have a better understanding of your body and how it can function in a balanced and harmonious way. If you are an athletic person you will experience a deeper level of body awareness as you see your abilities expand to their full potential.
GYROKINESIS® classes can be done individually, or for a group of people. Scheduled classes are available in town, or I can come to your home, or place of business. GYROTONIC® sessions are done in my studio in Laingsburg.
