Bridging the Gap - a Complimentary Approach
by Cnythia Stajos, PhD.
Fall, 2003 Introducing Holistic Businesses
The Harvard Medical School survey (1997) disclosed 42% of Americans used alternative therapies, spending over $21 billion searching for a broader approach to healthcare. Interestingly, holistic therapies have long been part of the medical mainstream in their cultures of origin.
Traditional medicine no longer has a monopoly on healing. Mainstream medical journals affirm that ‘complementary’ therapies have real value and medical schools now offer some courses in alternative medicine.
Holistic/Alternative/Complementary (HAC) practitioners considers all the subtle indicators and changes that forewarned serious problems before they occur as well as the response and effect the illness has on the client. HAC increases people’s awareness to the subtle aspects changing within them and their environment and can improve the speed and depth of their recovery.
The next step takes the client into self-discovery and personal responsibility. All of the services and courses offered through the Michigan Institute of Complementary Healing are based on observing these indicators, as they are an integral part of healing. Food, movement, personal responsibility, and GOD/spirit are not separate from health.

Unfortunately, people have stopped paying attention to the subtle aspects of their experiences including the effects thoughts, feelings, and emotions have on their body. Sound nutrition, regular exercise, stress/crisis intervention, and a feeling of connectiveness to others and the world are vital for wholeness.
Changes in health occur when choice and responsibility meet. Forgiveness, connectiveness, and commitment are only part of the healing process that occurs when the client becomes actively involved, for "the core is also the end."
